Before the installation of the Dragrake system the Fries hydroelectric plant had to be shut down and the canal drained to allow sand and silt removal from the canal. This procedure involved a 2 weeks plant outage and involved excavators and dump trucks.

Installation of the Dragrakes has completely eliminated this procedure and the build up of silt no longer occurs.
